We are under the false assumption that we can just dash into a shop, grab the item we need and disappear back out of the sliding doors without being influenced by any other factors.
Unfortunately for your wallet and fortunately for the cash registers in the shops this is entirely not the case. From the moment you walk into any well known high street shop you will be bombarded with a plethera of marketing techniques that gently push and prod your unconcious mind, influencing you in ways that you are not aware of even as you are walking out of the shop carrying an iem that you never intended to buy.

One of the most high profile of these techniques involves what is widely known as ther Gruen Transfer. Named for Victor Gruen, an Austrian who designed the very first shopping mall, the term describes that split second when the mall's intentionally confusing layout makes our eyes glaze and our jaws slacken... the moment when we forget what we came for and become impulse buyers. But it doesn't stop there, every aspect of a shop's layout is designed to expose us to a host of unconcious cues that put us in the right frame of mind to buy. This includes factors such as the position of the products, the colour scheme of the shop, the smell (ever noticed the tempting odour of freshly baked bread that meets you upon entering a large supermarket) and of course the music.

Whether you are a shopper or employee, the genre, tempo and mood of the in-store music can have a direct influence on your attitude and disposition encouraging you to act in an unconcious manner. A example of this influence was demonstrated by a study carried out to test the effect music can have on shoppers and in this particular case the buyers of wine. The study recorded the levels of French and German wine that were sold in a large supermarket over a set period of time with French and German music being played alternately during the experiment. During times when French music was played French wine outsold German wine 3:1, whereas when German music was played German wine was sold at a ratio of 2:1 compared to French wine. Worryingly, when questioned customers professed to being unaware of the effects of the music. Alternatively, if you are a retailer this should give you a nice warm feeling in your stomach because you now know that with the right retail music system you could basically tell customers to buy your stock without them knowing it.

AVM Solutions UK Blog Now Launched

AVM Solutions UK is happy to announce the launch of our blog.
